Always Bet On Black

I have doubt that a computer monitor will vary its energy use, due to the predominant color being displayed.

But then again, I’m also suspicious about how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? Because really, who actually licks a Tootsie Pop? You stick the thing in your mouth — maybe move it from the left to the right, with a quick stop in the middle, then after a few minutes, you look at your tongue in the mirror to see what color it turned.

Nevertheless, this is the concept behind Blackle...umm, the energy use, not the Tootsie Pop. Blackle utilizes Google’s Custom Search software, but offers a black interface instead of Google’s recognizable white background. This is done under the premise that if Google were black, 750 Megawatt-hours per year would be saved in energy cost — or so they claim.

Anyway, if you have strong inclinations towards environmental responsibility, fiscal responsibility or you’re just a treehuggin’ hippie looking for a cause, you can check out Blackle (or one of its competitors), and possibly save a watt or two.

Best of all its got the 'similar page' option in the result page like the normal white Google. I use that a lot.
